¿Qué Género musical es The Ghost of Porto?
Thank you once again for reading the third installment of the series “If the Mountain Won’t Come to Muhammad…”.
Before getting into it, I want to tell you that two weekends ago we went to the Santa María la Ribera neighborhood to shoot what will probably be the final footage needed to finish the video for the next song to be released. I’m really excited about it, and it’s hard having to wait until the video is finished before you get to hear the song, but that’s an important and intrinsic part of this whole universe.
The other day, while I was out for my morning run, I took the time to listen to the new material by Mucho, titled ¿Puede Martí bajar a jugar? I had already listened to it a couple of times and hadn’t connected with it at all. But, being honest with myself, on those occasions I was listening while doing something else, so my soul wasn’t really present in what I was hearing; I was probably on autopilot.
That morning, though, while running, I was able to be fully present, body and soul, with this material. And to my great surprise, I connected with it on a level I had experienced before with previous material by that guy called Martí Perarnau IV. All I can say to him is: thank you again!
I had an incredibly powerful connection with many of the album’s lyrics, but especially with the song ¿Cómo están los máquinas? I cried and let it all out in a way I hadn’t in a long time, while running and connecting with those incredible lyrics, feeling like I was part of them, feeling guilty, and feeling grateful for the reminder that I often lose my way.
Of course, the saturated and distorted synthesizers are magical, and the mix, with absolutely no fear of blowing out your speakers, will be a great source of inspiration for the next material I work on.
Another moment that had a profound impact on my soul was the NAZA documentary. There isn’t much more I can add, other than describing the deathly silence that filled the movie theater when the documentary ended. We all walked out of there in shock, not because we didn’t know what we were going to see… but because our minds were trying to process something we already knew, and yet, despite knowing it, there is very little we can do to change: the cruel reality that surrounds us and that we are all exposed to. Needless to say, there were plenty of tears.
I don’t want to end on the previous paragraph. Even as I write this, I’ve found it difficult to concentrate on continuing this post. It’s hard not to stop and reflect, but for now, I don’t have any other experiences to share. So, let’s get to the main reason for this post.
What Genre Is The Ghost of Porto?
It doesn’t really have a genre, and I hope it stays that way. Every track is different and has its own world.
As it is, with the amount of music and genres that exist today, it’s already difficult to identify or classify a track into a particular genre. Any given track will have at least a couple of genres associated with it, and there will always be someone who disagrees with that classification too. What a pain in the ass.
Limiting a project to one genre, to me, is like shooting yourself in the foot. While I do think it’s important for a musical project to find its own sound, that can also work against you and make you carry a cross that doesn’t belong to you as a musician and creative.
Interesting projects change their sound with every album. They never stay in the same place. The Ghost of Porto changes with every track.
I like all kinds of music, and like many people, I don’t listen to just one genre. I used to when I was a teenager, and I don’t regret it, because I learned a lot from focusing on one genre and one particular scene. But I also missed out on a lot of things because I thought I was being rebellious… Now I love listening to all kinds of music, and in different formats too. There’s something magical about listening to an album from beginning to end, but there’s also something magical about putting every track in your digital music library on shuffle, or making a very specific playlist. Everything has its place in the right situation.
We tend to think that things were better in the past, or that what’s new is better… but the truth is, we don’t have to choose. We live in a world where we can enjoy so many different options. Let’s make use of all of them!
